Getting found on Google Maps: local search basics for medical practices

When someone in your area searches for a doctor, the map results often appear before anything else. For an independent practice, showing up there can matter more than a beautiful website. The basics are free and mostly come down to accuracy, consistency and patience.

Claim and complete your Google Business Profile

Your Google Business Profile is what appears on Google Maps and in local results. Claim it, verify it, and fill in every field you can:

  • The exact practice name, without extra keywords.
  • Your address, phone number and website.
  • Accurate hours, including holiday hours.
  • Primary and secondary categories that match your specialty.
  • Services, accessibility details and a short description in plain language.

Each provider may also have their own profile. Keep them consistent with the practice profile.

Keep your name, address and phone the same everywhere

Search engines compare your details across directories, insurance listings and health sites. When the address or phone number differs from place to place, they trust your listing less. Pick one exact format and use it everywhere, including your website footer.

Consistent, accurate details beat clever tricks in local search.

Add real photos

Photos of your entrance, waiting room and team help patients recognize your office and feel comfortable before they arrive. Never post photos of patients without written permission, and keep anything clinical out of public listings.

Ask for reviews the right way

Reviews influence both rankings and patient choice. Ask every patient the same way, for example with a link after the visit, and never offer rewards or only ask happy patients. When you reply to reviews, thank people warmly and never confirm that someone is a patient or discuss their care. That protects patient privacy.

Make your website support your listing

Your website should clearly state your specialty, the conditions and services you handle, your location and how to book. Create a page for each main service. Make sure the site loads quickly on phones, because most local searches happen on a phone.

Post updates

Google lets you post short updates, such as new providers, extended hours or seasonal reminders. Regular posts signal that the practice is active, and they give patients useful information.

Answer questions on your profile

Patients can ask questions on your listing. Answer them yourself, simply and accurately, so the first answer is not a guess from a stranger.

Track what happens

Your profile shows how many people called, asked for directions or visited your website. Watch those numbers monthly. Combine them with how new patients say they found you.

Be patient

Local rankings respond slowly. Accurate details, steady reviews and helpful content build over months. Avoid anyone promising instant first place results, and never use fake reviews.
